Here the Nicene Creed was formulated and introduced by Eusebius. But the party from Alexandria was not satisfied. They wanted the creed to make Jesus "Very God." So Constantine offered some bait to get the bishops to sign on to a new revised and edited, God-slanted Creed. If the bishops would sign, Constantine would allow them to stay as guests and enjoy his twentieth anniversary celebrations.
For all who refused, there was immediate banishment. "We give you warning...Let none of you presume, from this time forward, to meet in congregations. To prevent this, we command that you be deprived of all the houses in which you have been accustomed to meet...and that these should be handed over immediately to the catholic (i.e. universal) church."
Eusebius signed. But right afterward, he was sorry for what he had done. In a letter to Constantine he said, "We committed an impious act, O Prince, by subscribing to a blasphemy from fear of you."
Nevertheless, today in many Christian churches the creed is recited, "We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom........."
